We all know war can be a hard time for everyone but those left behind? It can be torture. Hoping you get a letter or a call, staying glued to the television and cringing at those news stories. Guess what happens to you now? Your loved one has gone off to fight a war (battle, fight, in that ilk of things) and some time has passed. Sadly the letters and e-mails have stopped so you are left wondering the fate of your loved one. What do you do? Do you move on or are you holding on to hope they'll come back?

Warning: There are triggers inside.

1. Post as your characters (List whether you prefer to be the one left behind or the returnee).
2. Others go to RNG and roll 1-8 for a scenes then respond.
3. Feel free to make up your own scenes too!
4. Respect others' preferences!
5. Have fun!
6. Angst away!

One: You get a call, or you get a knock at the door. You are told the person you love is dead and you feel like your whole world has caved in. The healing takes time but after awhile you pick up the pieces and you've finally moved on. You've never forgotten them and you know they'd want you to be happy. Then one day you get another call and you feel like you've been punched in the gut. Surprise! Your loved one is alive and has been rescued. What do you do now? Or if you are the one returning home how do you handle knowing the person you love is with another? Do you try to get them back? Or do you let them stay happy and walk away?

Two: You are so relieved to hear that they've found your loved one. You go to the hospital to see them but when you go to kiss them they stop you. Oh...wait...they have a big chunk of their memory gone. Oh no! Can you get them to remember your lives together? Does it hurt too much that you walk away rather than deal with it? You with the memory loss do you try to find yourself letting this person guide you. Do you refuse and walk away? Are those memories ever return, or are they gone forever?

Three: They have come back safe and sound. Though they cringe away from your touch and can be a little violent. Something about them has changed because of what they've seen. They rarely sleep and when they do they wake up screaming. The intimacy seems to be gone because you can't seen to get close to them. Can you handle it? Can you work with them? Or have you had enough? Do you leave? The returnee how do you feel? Do you wish you could just hold them and be normal again? Do you seek help or think you can handle it yourself?

Four: Even before they left it was as if the love was gone between the two of you. Plans have been made to break-up or divorce but after the hell they went through? You feel obligated to stay. You try your best to rekindle what was lost but it's gone. Finally you are at the breaking point and it's time to tell your significant other that it's over. You want to end it. Either one of you has this feeling and are acting to end the charade. Ready to break it to the hometown hero or to your sweetheart that waited for you?

Five: You've lost them and it was just too much for you. People have told you to move on yet you never could. Now you get a call. They've been found but it's unclear if they'll make it. Better hurry and rush to their side just in case. You don't want them to go without you getting to tell them one last time you love them just in case. Alternately you are injured and you know it might be the end and you refuse surgery until you get to see them one last time. You want them to know you love them.

Six: You lost your other half and you still aren't over it. Might be that little one asleep in the other room that has their eyes or smile. You are always reminded of what you lost when you look at that. The sad part is you never got to tell them the good news. Never got to hear their excitement. Or maybe you had an adoption in motion and were just waiting and it happened while they were gone. It still reminds you of what you and your love had planned for their future. Then you get the call they were found, and now you are nervous. How will they get along with their child? Will they still want that life? How do you take it the first time you see your eyes when looking at the child?

Seven: Finally news comes in and they've been found and you couldn't be happier. They were injured pretty badly and had to undergo surgery. They are alive but they've lost a limb or one of their senses. How do you two deal with this? Do you try to work on it together? Do you leave unable to handle it? Or let your loved one go so they can have a normal life? It'll be a long stressful road, can the relationship survive? For better or for worse?

Eight: Make up your own if I've missed something.

Her eyes never leaving Junpei, Fuuka listened to Mitsuru, her voice seeming to come through a fog. The pause made Fuuka tighten her grip on Junpei's leg. a part of her not wanting to hear what was going to follow.

"...alone..." she whispered, closing her eyes a moment to collect herself. By sheer will, she kept herself from collapsing in tears. The next pause was even worse, and she felt more dread as Aigis spoke slowly.

"...Junpei's persona has been locked away inside him. We are unsure of the cause; perhaps his injuries were so much that it went into shock." Aigis saw Fuuka's growing panic, and took a small step forward, wishing to comfort her.

"But I suspect in time it shall awaken again. Perhaps when Junpei does." Aigis glanced at Mitsuru. Fuuka looked back at the young man laying on the bed. Grasping onto the shred of hope Aigis had given her, she nodded.

"Yes...once he wakes up...everything will be fine..."

Once she had entered the hospital room, Fuuka refused to leave. Pulling a chair up beside his bed, she remained there, gently holding his hand in hers. She spoke with their friends who came in, thanking them for checking on her, and did her best to smile.

Aigis remained most of the time, responding gently to Fuuka's questions. Finally, she decided to leave Fuuka alone with him, knowing she wanted it. As it grew later, she fought to stay awake. But the long day had taken its toll. Within minutes, her head rested on her chin, Junpei's hand still held in her own.

Feeling movement under her hand, Fuuka sat up, her head foggy with sleep. As her eyes met Junpei's, relief and joy washed over her. She didn't even hear his question, or think about how he was looking at her. He was awake!

"Junpei! I'm so...so glad...!" Her eyes watering, she leaned forward, gently pressing her cheek to his, hands resting on his shoulders. She really wanted to grab hold of him and hug him tight. But in his condition, that wouldn't be wise.

"...we were so worried about you..." she murmured, lightly kissing his cheek as she did so.

Confused by his reaction, Fuuka leaned back, her hands still on his shoulders. Why wasn't he trying to kiss her? Why was he pulling away.

"...miss...?" she repeated, a terrible feeling growing in her stomach. Blinking the sleep from her eyes, she examined his face. He was not looking at her with love and warmth. He was being shy, and sweet, but there was no intimacy there.

Junpei's words hit her in the gut, knocking the wind from her. Slumping back into her chair, her hands dropped into her lap. Staring at him, she searched his face for some sign that this was a cruel, cruel joke, even though she knew it wasn't.

"...you don't remember me...?" she whispered, her voice cracking.

Sucking in a breath, she bit back more tears, surprised she had more to give. Wiping her eyes, Fuuka steadied herself. This kind of thing was to be expected, and with the proper treatment, he would be right as rain.

His question, at least, gave her something else to focus on. Unable to fully look him in the eyes, knowing what wouldn't be there, she nodded.

"I'm afraid so...you were very badly injured on a mission..." pausing, she wondered how much to say. Glancing at the door, she shifted. "...how...how much do you remember, Junpei?"

Reaching out again, she touched his hand, forcing a small smile. "Don't push yourself though...you still have a lot of recovering to do."

He honestly didn't remember anything. Squeezing his hand lightly, she pulled it back to her lap. She considered lying, and saying he had been hit by a car. But then what? Lying would only breed more lies, and she had never lied to him before.

Hearing his question, she looked up and nodded. "Yes...well, you're in Memorial Hospital right now. You're friends with the current owner."

As she spoke, the door opened and a worried looking Aigis glided in. Fuuka looked at her, then at Junpei, then back at her. "He's awake," Fuuka murmured, licking her lips before adding, "B-but...but he has no memories."

Aigis frowned deeply, moving quickly to Fuuka's side; she knew enough about her friend to know she was not handling this well. Putting a hand on her shoulder, the blonde cyborg looked down at Junpei, scanning him for any anomalies.

"What is your last memory, Junpei?" she asked, her brow furrowed.

Before Fuuka could think of how to respond, she realized that Junpei was staring at Aigis. Granted, her outfit was strange, but he was doing more than staring; he was ogling. Another punch to the gut. He certainly hadn't looked her that way when he woke up. Turning to look at a monitor, she wondered how much longer she could stay.

Aigis, seeing his increased heart rate and blood rush to his face, realized what was happening. It had taken a long time to reach this point, but she knew Junpei well enough to know when he was getting perverted. Or what she deemed perverted. Squeezing Fuuka's shoulder, she crossed her arms, deciding to look as intimidating as possible.

"No, it is not. Now answer my question; what is your last memory before waking up?"

"Yes, you are a college student," Aigis replied, after the other girl remained silent. They both glanced at him as he spoke, though Fuuka couldn't think of any kind of reply. He didn't remember her at all, was barely looking at her or responding to her touches. His vague feeling of being in college gave her little comfort.

"Perhaps in time your memories will become more solid," Aigis said, uncrossing her arms. "You have been traumatized, so it is natural you would have some memory loss. I am your friend, Aigis." Turning some, she motioned to Fuuka, "This is Fuuka Yamagishi, she is your--"

"Classmate," Fuuka interrupted, sharing a glance with Aigis before adding, "...a-and friend. We were on our way to Zoology. That's what you remember." Smiling weakly she ignored the blue eyes that burrowed into her head. She knew she shouldn't have lied, but she knew Junpei. If he knew she was his girlfriend, he would try to take care of her out of a sense of honor, not because he loved her. That would make the heartbreak she already felt unbearable.

'Girl in E-2' Fuuka thought, feeling a humorless chuckle escape her. Nodding her head, she pushed her braid over her shoulder. "It used to be very short, yes. I've grown it out."

Watching Junpei look at her, her chest tightened, and she hoped that maybe he could see past the fog. Maybe if he stared long enough, he'd realize who she was. What they meant to each other. But the moment passed and he was asking another question. Letting out a breath, she glanced at Aigis, who had finally turned her attention back to Junpei.

The blonde responded, "The year is 2012."

"Ah...th-thank you."

His compliment made Fuuka smile, though it also made her stomach hurt. She honestly just wanted to wrap him up in her arms and kiss him. But she couldn't do that when he was in such a state.

The sudden beeping of two monitors and Junpei's physical reaction wiped everything else out of her mind. Jumping up, she put her hands on his shoulder as Aigis moved to look at the screens. Fuuka looked at him, deeply concerned.

"Junpei! What happened? Are you alright?" Looking at Aigis, she hoped for some kind of explanation, but she received none. It had happened too fast. Frowning at one another, the girls both looked back at him when he realized how many years he had 'lost.' He really had forgotten everything.

Sitting down, but keeping her hand on Junpei's shoulder, Fuuka racked her brain for something to say. "...only for now, Junpei," she spoke quietly. "We'll help you, little by little. I can't...I can't understand what it is you are feeling now. But I....we're here for you. Willing to do anything for you. Anything."

"You did receive quite a blow to the head. Pain in your cranial region is to be expected," Aigis said matter of factly. Still, it was strange that it had affected the machines as well. Looking at her friend, she wondered what was going on in that head of his.

Fuuka jumped as Mitsuru burst in, instinctively standing up; though they were friends, the red head had a very dominating presence. She felt for the man Mitsuru was yelling at, and waved a hand, "I-it only just happened , Mitsuru, he has not been awake long," she said, glancing at the researcher. Aigis nodded in confirmation.

Looking down at Junpei, Fuuka noticed how he seemed awe struck with his latest visitor. She couldn't really blame him, she was sometimes in awe of her herself. Still, she couldn't say that a twinge of jealousy didn't pinch her insides. Moving a bit closer to Junpei, she turned her attention back to the Kirijo president.

"He also...he has no memories if the last three years," just saying it aloud made her want to cry. But she held it together. Perhaps Mitsuru would know what to do.

Mitsuru had grown into an ideal leader, Fuuka thought. She was able to switch from ferocious to gentle in a matter of seconds. It was a good thing too, otherwise Junpei might not have been able to speak at all.

Listening to Junpei recall his last memory made Fuuka catch her breath; she couldn't believe he had forgotten so much. Lost so much. He was the same Junpei she loved, and yet was different. He couldn't even imagine being friends with Mitsuru, let alone that he had once fought along side her.

'He doesn't remember Minato...' she realized, watching him as he fumbled over his words. How she wanted to embrace him, and kiss his face. She wanted to promise him that things would be alright, and she would carry him through whatever lay ahead. But she couldn't. He wouldn't understand why.

Lost in her own thoughts, she had to take a second to understand what Mitsuru had said. Turning to her, she furrowed her brow a moment, before it hit her. Of course it made sense on a practical level, but it would also spare an explanation of why Junpei and her shared a flat. Fumbling over her own words now, she said, "I-I can do that, Mitsuru! I-I mean...it would be the most practical option."

Glancing at Junpei, she gave his shoulder a squeeze and a quick smile. "I'm a very good observer, and...well, since we are..." she struggled to think of a word, "...classmates, I can help you get back into a routine again." It was weak reasoning, but it was all she could think of.

Returning Mitsuru's smile, though more forced, she was glad to have her as a friend. This situation would be impossible to handle without her. Especially when Junpei began to protest against living with her. Watching him, she knew he was doing this because he did not remember her, and believed such a situation would be scandalous. But it still hurt.

As he fell back, however, she stood up, a hand pressing to his forehead. "You feel warm," she murmured, worry etched across his face. Aigis examined the monitors, nodding to herself before saying, "It doesn't appear serious, though medication is recommended."

Fuuka nodded, knowing Mitsuru and her team would waste no time in taking care of him. "You don't have to worry about imposing, Junpei..." she said softly, "It would be my pleasure to help you, if only for a short time." Swallowing back the lump her throat she forced a small smile, "Besides, it isn't as if we'll be sharing a bed or anything." She couldn't believe she had said that, it just made her hurt more. But maybe it would ease his nerves...maybe.

It took Fuuka a few moments to realize Junpei had passed out. Her heart fluttered in panic, but seeing no change on the monitors, she relaxed. He had just been hit with a lot of information, it was amazing he had stayed awake this long. Gently, she laid her hand on his, gazing at him, Mitsuru's voice fading into the background.

~A week later~

"Well...here we are," Fuuka said with a nervous smile, standing in front of their apartment. Of course, to Junpei, it was just hers, and she had made sure it would appear so. With more tears then she was prepared for, she had put away their photos, all of his personal affects, and anything that suggested more than one person had ever lived here. The only photo of them she had been unable to put away was the group shot of SEES. Surely that one would be alright. 'Might even be helpful,' she had thought.

Opening the door, she stepped in first, waiting for Junpei to follow before closing it. Various shades of blue could be seen through out the apartment--furniture, wall color, kitchen appliances--giving the place a cool and relaxing feeling. She had been sure to light some candles of his favorite scent, hoping to ease his nerves.

"...I hope you like it," she said softly, looking over the living space. It looked empty and lonesome without Junpei's little messes or his photos sitting on the tables. Looking back at him, it felt even more lonely, knowing he wasn't that man anymore.

"Can I get you anything to drink?" she asked, smiling at him, playing nervously with the bottom of her shirt.

Watching Junpei anxiously, she wondered if the apartment was familiar to him. Biting the inside of her cheek, she forced herself not to ask him or prod as to what else he remembered. If anything. Nodding at his compliment, she began moving to the kitchen, already anticipating his answer to her offer.

Before he had finished speaking, she had pulled out a soda from the fridge, opened it and walking back to hand it to him.

"Here you go," she said with a small smile. She decided to get one for herself too, just to have something to do with her hands.

"Thank you...I hope you enjoy staying here. I want this to be your home too...w-when you're staying here," she said dropping her gaze a moment before continuing. "If there's anything you need or want, don't hesitate to ask."

Tapping her fingers against her soda can, she began to move down a short hall way that lead to the two bedrooms. Keeping her eyes away from their bedroom, she took him into the guest room. It was simple, and a blank slate. "Here's your room, Junpei. Some of your things are over there," she motioned to two boxes sitting beside the bed. Inside were items she, and Mitsuru, had deemed fit for him to have; nothing that might clue him into the reality of the situation. At least not yet.

Fuuka's lips twitched slightly, wondering if he would notice when she kept having his favorite things. Despite the orders from Mitsuru to keep him out of the loop for now, she couldn't in good conscience feign ignorance to what made him happiest. With luck, he wouldn't catch on until his memories started returning.

'Because they will return. They have to.'

"Yes, what we thought you would need anyway. If you think of something we might have forgotten, I can see about getting it for you," she said with a smile, thinking of the rest of his things, crammed into their closet and under their bed. Sitting down on the bed, she watched him begin to look into the boxes, her heart aching. Not being able to hold him or be as close to him was more painful than she ever thought possible. Rubbing her hands on her legs, she straightened up at his question.

Opening her mouth, she paused, remembering what Junpei had told her, and what she had seen. She had met his father a hand full of times, and he seemed to like her well enough. But it was difficult to like a man who she knew had hit her beloved. Thinking of how to answer, she shook her head.

"No...you were living with a room mate," she answered, knowing she was walking a fine line. "You haven't lived at home for quite awhile. You moved into some dorms in high school, which is how you know Mitsuru and myself. After that though, you got...a room mate." Shifting, she realized mentioning a room mate was a bad idea. Dropping hints about who this 'room mate' was, was probably not going to end well.

Opening her mouth, Fuuka almost made a vague allusion that his room mate had in fact been her, in the hopes that maybe he would remember. But she thought better of it, clearing her throat as she thought up who could have been his room mate.

"...K-Kenji Tomochika. From high school?. He's been very busy...but we've kept him informed on how you're doing," she said with a small smile, making a note to tell Mitsuru to get Kenji in the loop. Though how she was going to convince him...Fuuka didn't want to know. "I'm sure you'll get to see him soon enough."

At his remark about them 'sorta' living together, she laughed nervously, fiddling with her hair some. "N-no, not at all! You don't remember it so...so you can't help how you reacted. Besides...it's a sign of your gentlemanly nature."

Glancing at him a bit shyly, she blushed. It felt weird, trying to flirt with him. It sounded so awkward. Dropping her gaze, she stood up, straightening out her dress.

"Well, I suppose I shall...let you get to it. If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask. I'll be in the kitchen if you need me," bowing her head, she headed for the door.

Fuuka blinked, then giggled, remembering how Kenji used to really try to date one of the teachers at school. She wouldn't be surprised if he HAD moved on to professors. Shrugging some, she smiled, "Maybe so."

Stopping, she looked back at him, realizing how flustered he was getting. His comment about Yukari sent her back to when she had first met them; the strawberry blonde had really been ruthless back then. Well, she was ruthless now too...but there was a fondness there. At least Fuuka thought so.

Gazing at him, she wanted to gather him up in her arms and reassure him that he didn't need to feel embarrassed. That she loved him entirely, fumbling words and all. Instead, she smiled at him, tilting her head some.

"...I know you never would, Junpei. You're the kindest man I know." Her cheeks glowed pink as she bowed her head. Taking a breath, she looked at him again, her smile broader now. "How about I make us some sandwiches, and then I can help you sort through your things?"

She just smiled, knowing she wouldn't be able to convince him otherwise. Not today anyway. Nodding, she headed back to the kitchen, feeling a bit more cheerful than before. Getting him to smile and blush brought her joy. She hoped to do it more the longer he stayed.

Once in the kitchen she pulled out some cream cheese, bread, and the cucumber she had bought earlier that week. Cutting it up into slices, she hummed to herself; the pieces were a bit thick, but at least she didn't cut herself. Smearing the cream cheese onto the bread, she made sure there was plenty on both. Finally, she placed four slices in each sandwich before putting the second bread on top.

Pleased with her work, slightly messy though it was, she put them on two plates, and headed back into the guest room. Smiling as she walked in, she handed Junpei his plate.

"Here you go, Junpei. It's cucumber and cream cheese; nothing fancy, but I hope you like it."

Smiling as he took a sandwich, she said, "I know," without thinking. Sitting down beside him, she hoped he wouldn't catch it, or credit her knowledge just to Mitsuru. Taking a bite of hers, she realized it wasn't quite the perfect sandwich she had hoped it would be. Still, it wasn't bad, and she continued eating, stealing several glances at Junpei as she did so.

When started his question, she was already looking at him, and saw the cucumber fall into his lap. Her body reacted without a thought, her hand immediately reaching out and picking the cucumber off of him.

It wasn't until she was distributing it onto his plate that she realized how intimate a gesture that had been. Thighs were places for couples' hands, not acquaintances. And Junpei barely viewed her a more than a classmate now.

Dropping her hand to her lap, she turned her head, "Sorry! I forget sometimes," she started her heart aching, "that...not everyone needs to be mothered," she ended her excuse lamely, wondering if she should be punished more for lying or for telling really terrible lies.

Laughing some to brush it off she answered his question quickly. "I cook as much as I can. It's a passion of mine, though I'm not very good at it."
